Roots Trip to Ethiopia

empowering

Community Empowerment

#4

An annual and comprehensive program by the Social Inclusion Administration, with the Rishon LeZion Foundation’s assistance, that aims to provide an up close and personal encounter with the story of the Jewish immigration to Israel from Ethiopia through Sudan, with all of its hardships, trials and tribulations. It enables students to become acquainted with Ethiopian culture and learn about the connection between cultures, strengthens inter-generational ties, and bolsters the sense of belonging and unity.

In 2019, 15 teenage boys and girls from the Ramat Eliyahu neighborhood made the journey. It was the third such trip. The group encounters were accompanied by experiential activities and open discussion. In addition, the teens who experienced the journey in the previous times were invited to share their experiences and the values that they learned on the trip and took with them as they move forward with their lives, and the change that they underwent in the wake of the process in which they participated.

The program takes place over the course of a year, and it includes a significant and gradual preparation process. This preparation takes place ahead of their departure for the trip in Ethiopia. The participants experience it both individually and as a group, culminating with the trip to Ethiopia.
