#22

Project Flying and Being Proud is run by the Ye’elim Association.

We are a number of IDF officers, retired pilots and other people who care. We got organized and established, on a volunteer basis, a course to teach flying to youth from the Ethiopian community, in order to empower, enhance self-confidence, develop personal capability, and to instill pride among teens from the Ethiopian community.

Purpose of the Course:

To foster personal capability, self-confidence and pride in oneself among youth from the Ethiopian community, through aviation and pilot studies, as well as acquiring a civilian pilot’s license, so that one day they will enlist in the IDF in aviation professions, as well as in the Israel Air Force Pilots Course.

About the Project:

Youth from the Ethiopian community, ages 15-16, are selected to participate in the aviation and pilots course based on scholastic achievement and personal abilities from schools in and around Rishon LeZion, Kfar Saba, Ramat Hasharon, Ness Ziona, Ramle, Yavne and other towns.

Over a three-year period the participants study the following professions and subjects:

Phase I: Aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, pilot procedure, flight lessons in a simulator.
Phase II: Practical flying lessons, up to and including obtaining a pilot’s license.
The cost of training a flight student up to receiving a pilot’s license is about NIS 60,000.

We are proud to say that recently four of our course graduates successfully completed the program, and received a civilian pilot’s license from the Civil Aviation Authority of Israel.
